I’m not failing if I’m not trying.

Funny thing happened this week as I was setting some goals for my life coaching business. I had a laugh out loud, make a fart noise with my lips moment of discovery. You know how those go, right?

I want to grow my Friday morning “Manage Your Brain to Manage Your Body” life coaching group by at least four members. Up until last November, we’d had a cozy group with just two members and myself, when we decided to stop meeting until January 2024.

Between May 2023 and Thanksgiving 2023, we had each lost about 10 pounds. We’d planned to move slowly through our weight journey rather than focus on speedy weight loss; deciding that choosing to lose slowing meant choosing to enjoy our lives now.

Although I had planned to start up the group again and to start offering it out to others in January, I kept putting it off and putting it off until both of my members reached out to me asking when we could start back up. (We’re now back on the books for the first Friday in April.)

The reason I kept putting off restarting the group or trying to grow our numbers was because I have put back on all of the weight I lost and more. I felt like an imposter. I worried that people would see that I am overweight and wonder how I can offer weight management coaching. “She can’t do it herself! So how can she possibly help me??”

I felt like a failure.

Then it dawned on me. Wait a minute. I’m not actually TRYING to stop overeating at the moment. How can I be a failure if I’m not even trying to do what I’m accusing myself of failing at (I hope that’s not too confusing)! And, I am most definitely NOT trying to lose weight right now. ;-)

DUH! Once I recognized this, it was easy for me to believe that I haven’t failed at anything, and to get back to believing that I can still be effective at helping people who want to work to stop overeating right now.

Okay, I’m ready now. And I’m looking forward to kicking off our group again next week.

BTW, failing is good! Why? It means you are trying! So, fail forward to success!
